Dubai Click and Travel: 12–15-second mobile passport check

GDRFA Dubai has officially launched Click and Travel — a mobile passport control service. An officer with a handheld device walks the terminal and processes each passenger on the spot in 12–15 seconds. A pilot from May to end of August 2026 handled 31,373 passengers. On departure, the service is open to everyone; on arrival, first to UAE citizens, residents and GCC nationals, with expansion planned. Here is how it works, who it reaches, and what changes for business travellers flying through DXB.

GDRFA Dubai launched Click and Travel on 7 September 2026 — mobile passport control with biometrics and facial recognition: an officer with a handheld device clears each passenger in the DXB terminal in 12–15 seconds.

Common questions on this topic

What is Click and Travel and who can use it?

Click and Travel is a mobile passport control service launched by GDRFA Dubai on 7 September 2026. Instead of a counter, a GDRFA officer with a handheld device walks up to the passenger inside the terminal and processes the entry or exit on the spot. On departure the service is available to every passenger category — UAE citizens, residents and visitors. On arrival at launch it is available to UAE citizens, residents and GCC nationals, with plans to extend it to other categories.

How long does a passport check take with the new service?

Between 12 and 15 seconds per passenger, according to GDRFA Dubai pilot data. That window covers biometric verification, facial recognition, e-passport reading and an automated pre-screen against GDRFA databases over a secure network. Passengers do not have to queue at a counter — the officer can process them inside the terminal, in the queue itself or in a waiting area.

Do I need to download an app, register or apply for anything in advance?

No. No prior app, form or registration is required: the service runs on top of biometric records GDRFA already holds from the passenger’s Emirates ID, residence visa or visit visa. The passenger only needs a valid passport and permission to enter or leave the UAE. The GDRFA officer initiates the check from the handheld device.

Does Click and Travel replace Smart Gates or the counters?

No — it is an added channel. Smart Gates and staffed counters at DXB continue to operate as before. Click and Travel is a way to absorb peak-hour flows and shorten queues without building new counters: the officer comes to the passenger, not the other way around. Combining the three channels — Smart Gates for those who prefer self-service, counters for complex cases, and Click and Travel for fast in-hall processing — lets DXB scale throughput without redesigning terminals.

Where does the service run today and at what scale?

The first pilot ran in October 2025 in Terminal 3 at DXB. An expanded second phase started in May 2026, covering all terminals and all passenger categories: from May to end of August 2026 the service completed 31,373 passport transactions. From 7 September 2026 Click and Travel has moved to a permanent, officially live service. The rollout schedule and daily coverage hours remain operationally at GDRFA Dubai’s discretion.

The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) officially launched Click and Travel on 7 September 2026 — a mobile passport control service inside DXB. A GDRFA officer with a handheld device walks up to the passenger in the terminal and completes biometric verification, facial recognition and e-passport reading in 12 to 15 seconds. A pilot phase from May to end of August 2026 processed 31,373 passengers.

The launch was announced at a press conference at DXB. Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, framed the idea simply: «With Click and Travel, the service comes to the passenger instead of the passenger seeking the service.» Major General Talal Al Shanqiti, Assistant Director General for Airports, added: «We are delivering counter services to the passenger — instead of the traditional approach.»

What has been launched

Click and Travel is a mobile passport control service. A GDRFA officer moves through the departure or arrival hall carrying a handheld device connected to GDRFA Dubai’s internal databases. The passenger completes formalities without stopping at a counter. Key parameters of the service:

  • Processing time — 12 to 15 seconds per passenger. Full cycle: biometrics + facial recognition + e-passport reading + secure-network cross-check.
  • Mobility. The officer can process passengers in the queue, in a waiting area, or near the gate — no fixed-counter dependency.
  • Departures — all categories. UAE citizens, residents, visitors and transit passengers.
  • Arrivals — first UAE citizens, residents and GCC nationals. Expansion to other categories is planned.
  • No prior registration. The service runs on top of biometric data GDRFA already holds via Emirates ID and visa records.

How it works

The officer’s handheld device combines three biometric channels and one connectivity layer:

  • Biometric verification. Fingerprint capture cross-checked against the GDRFA database.
  • Facial recognition. A live face match against the enrolled reference.
  • Electronic passport reading. NFC/OCR against the e-passport chip.
  • Automated pre-screening over a secure network. The device pulls up passenger data — visa status, entry or exit clearance, history — from GDRFA systems in real time.

Combining three biometric channels with pre-screening over a secure network is what compresses the whole transaction into a 12–15 second window. This is what makes Click and Travel structurally different from Smart Gates: Smart Gates require the passenger to walk up to the device, scan the document and look at the camera. Click and Travel reverses that flow — the device and the officer come to the passenger.

Pilot: numbers and geography

The rollout came in two phases. The first pilot took place in October 2025 in Terminal 3 at DXB — a proof of concept. The second, expanded phase began in May 2026 and extended across all terminals and all passenger categories:

The launch was announced at a press conference at DXB. GDRFA has not publicly disclosed the schedule for extending arrivals to all categories, the size of the handheld device fleet, or the specific hours in which the service is prioritised — those are operational decisions retained by GDRFA Dubai.

What this changes for business travellers and expats

Main implications for the audience that flies through DXB for work or lives in the UAE:

  • Shorter queues at peak hours. Mobile officers absorb queue pressure at counters without occupying physical space in the terminal.
  • Faster arrival after long flights. UAE citizens, residents and GCC nationals now have a third border-processing channel alongside Smart Gates and counters.
  • Same biometric depth as Smart Gates. This is not a lighter check — only the queue and physical logistics compress; the identity and status verification is the same.
  • No pre-work required. No apps, forms or advance payments — everything runs on biometric data already on file.

For residents specifically: eligibility on arrival from day one is determined by residence visa status. A full map of live UAE residence categories and who each one suits is in «UAE Residence Visa Types 2026: Every Route to Residency». For those going the property-investor route, a separate breakdown of the 2026 rules is in «UAE Golden Visa 2026: Mortgage and Off-plan Now Qualify at AED 2M».

Where it fits in DXB and GDRFA digitalisation

Click and Travel is part of a broader digital-experience push at DXB. The airport already runs Smart Gates for fully automated biometric border crossing, plus Red Carpet gates and other automated-identity pilots. GDRFA Dubai in parallel keeps widening its digital touchpoints with residents and visitors — from online visa renewal to automated identification on arrival.

The strategic bet is not to pick one technology but to assemble a multi-channel system. Counters handle complex and non-standard cases. Smart Gates absorb the mass flow of passengers happy to self-serve at a fixed unit. Click and Travel adds a mobile channel to soak up queues and peaks without building new counters. Combined, the three let DXB scale throughput faster than passenger volumes grow — without large capital spend on terminals.

For our audience, this is one more signal of the UAE’s strategic direction toward a digital state: biometrics, unified national databases and mobile government service delivery are becoming the norm at critical touchpoints — from the airport to visa renewal to company registration.
